A Fresh Start...
Dec. 12th, 2010 04:02 amI've been an LJ user for years. I contemplated actually just starting a sort of sub-journal over there so as not to lose my following. But, having been given an invite from a dear creative friend, I figured why not start the process here since this is supposed to be a more creativity driven community more so than a bunch of whining teenagers with angst issues.
I won't start making promises to post frequently. Likely you'll get something once a week at best. I work and I would, in all seriousness, like to devote more time to my fiction than a journal about the process. But I feel that the process needs a voice as well, and so here we are.
For the record, a bit about me: (the following will also be posted in my profile)
I'm close enough to 32 to call it that at this point. :-) I am married to the love of my life (and likely several other lifetimes, if one wants to be technical about it) and we are very happy. We have started building a bit of a life for ourselves in East Texas, where we settled to be closer to his daughter and my family.
East Texas being the quaint place that it is; my writing habits and eccentricities tend to not make me many friends. Sure, I have many acquaintances both through my day-job and various social functions, however, true friends are few and far between. Generally I find that the people I converse with more often than not are not even in Texas; but rather scattered around the world. And this is all good to me. Too many social obligations takes away from time to write.
I write many things, but primarily my work is in supernatural suspense fiction and paranormal romance. My work is largely influenced by many years of study of the paranormal and the occult. I have been an ordained minister since 2003 and I have extensively undertaken studies in various spiritual traditions and teach courses designed to help those so inclined, to find their own spiritual tradition and connection with the divine source. Yes, this does mean that I believe in such a force known as God. I claim Gnostic more so than any other religious moniker, and the reasons for this are as personal as anything else you could ask. I might elaborate, I might not. For now, we'll leave it be.
I started in paranormal research at a young age. I was somewhere between 13 and 15 when I was going on my first investigations and training. Now, I have my own group and we are actively investigating claims in East Texas and the surrounding area at this point.
My writing is influenced by all of this and more. Every writer has demons in their closet that occasionally come out on the page.
My purpose for this journal is to keep a record of my writing process and allow my readers (and fans, should I acquire any) to take a peek into my world and how I create my characters, settings, and the inevitable drama that unfolds on the pages of my books. It is also practical of me to say that this is a place that I would also like to find myself interacting with readers. To this end, I shall endeavor to answer questions that are posed through the blog by comments or by addressing them publicly in a journal entry when appropriate.
I am a published author; though my first book was a bit of a flop being poorly edited, rushed to production, and badly marketed (if I can call anything the publisher did marketing). My plans for 2011 include the digital and print release of the first book in a series that has been very much in the works for a number of years.
I also serve as the co-author for a web-fiction serial called Martius Catalyst. This can be found at http://www.martiuscatalyst.com and while this has been a slow starting project it is overhauling to take a giant leap in early 2011 with the help of my illustrious co-author Casondra Brewter and our illustator Jackie Fedyk. Do check it out and let me know how it suits. It is a bit different from my usual work, but it has been a hell of a fun project.
As for details about daily life and the writing life that most people ask authors:
I suppose my literary tastes lean more to Stephen King, Anne Rice, and Neil Gaiman more than any other modern authors. Though, I do admit that I enjoy John Saul's works from time to time and thoroughly enjoyed Elizabeth Kostova's : The Historian. I also have a sincere love for classics like Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and of course Lewis Carroll.
I do write to music and the music I'm listening to at any given time always depends upon my mood and the scene I am working on. However, I enjoy many genres. There will always be a soft spot for me with Celtic music. However, I'm really quite eclectic and enjoy a variety of music including Alternative Rock, Industrial, Ambient, Gothic, Adult Contemporary, and Easy Listening.
I suppose that would do for now. I may add more later on about specific interests and so forth, but the reality is, if you follow either of my blogs you'll know exactly what I'm interested in.
